What does MTG stand for?

MTG stands for Magic: The Gathering, the collectible trading card game created by mathematician Richard Garfield and released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It was the first trading card game ever made and remains the largest, with tens of millions of players worldwide. In the game, players take the role of planeswalkers who cast spells and summon creatures to defeat their opponents, building personalized decks from a pool of more than 25,000 unique cards printed over three decades. Outside gaming, MTG can also stand for meeting in workplace shorthand or mortgage in finance, so context matters. When the letters appear in card shops, hobby forums, or gaming groups, though, they almost always mean Magic: The Gathering.
